How to install and customize a Garmin watch face
The look is usually set on the watch, the data in the phone app. Most support questions about watch faces come down to exactly that split.
Installing
Open the Connect IQ Store app on your phone, search for the face, and tap install. The face syncs to the watch over Bluetooth, which takes a few seconds to a few minutes depending on how chatty your connection is. You do not need files or cables for this.
On the watch, hold the button or press and hold on the current face to open the face list, then pick the new one. If it is not in the list, the sync has not finished; open Garmin Connect once and leave it in the foreground for a moment.
Customizing: on the watch
Press and hold the face, then choose the settings or customize entry. This is where the visual choices usually live: design, colour, layout, typeface. Changes apply immediately, which makes it the fast way to try combinations.
Customizing: in Garmin Connect
Open Garmin Connect, go to Devices, pick your watch, then Connect IQ apps, watch faces, and your face. This is where developers put the longer lists: which metric sits in which data field, unit and separator choices, anything with more options than a watch menu can comfortably scroll.
The two menus are not a design decision made in comfort. The on-device settings API and the phone settings API are different, and some option types only exist in one of them. If a setting you expect is missing on the watch, it is in the app, and the other way round.
When it does not work
The face is not in the list. The sync has not completed. Open Garmin Connect, wait, and check the Connect IQ section of the device page.
The store says not compatible. Check the model exactly. Garmin model names are not resolution classes: a 265S is not a smaller 265, it is a different display size and needs its own graphics from the developer. A face can support one and not the other.
A data field shows dashes. The metric is not available on your device, or the watch has not collected it yet. Body Battery, stress and weather come from Garmin and appear after a sync; some older or cheaper models do not provide all of them.
The display goes dark with always-on switched on. Once sleep mode and battery saver are ruled out, that is the platform enforcing its limit, not a bug in your watch. A face may light only around ten per cent of the display in always-on mode, and one that exceeds it gets always-on switched off at runtime. The fix is a leaner always-on view — see the 10 % rule.
Numbers look wrong for your region. Thousands separators follow the device language unless the face offers its own setting; many do, in the phone app rather than on the watch.
Removing a face
Delete it on the watch through the Connect IQ app on the device, or from Garmin Connect under the device's Connect IQ list. That takes the face and the settings stored on the watch off the device. Settings you changed in the Garmin Connect app are also kept in your Garmin account, which Garmin manages; removing the face does not touch them. A watch face has no account of its own with the developer, so there is nothing to remove on that side.
